Why Don't You Get A Real Job?

How many of us have had that question hammered into our consciousness? I would bet that most musicians, artists, actors, writers, missionaries, athletes, entrepreneurs, stay-at-home parents, and inventors have all had to deal with this question. After we are successful and the big money and fame is rolling in, then everyone says how brave and tenacious we were. After we change the world with our art, our incredibly successful children, our spiritual teachings, our new ideas and business concepts, then people say we are “lucky” to be one of the chosen few as if we didn’t really work all that hard to get to that successful place. Until that day when we are fabulously wealthy and our industry grants us superstar status, we are deemed dreamers, unrealistic, illogical, and without real direction as we diligently toil away at our work until it’s worthy of acceptance as a “real job.” They see us as an overnight success or as complete failures. Until we are winners, our work is deemed as a hobby, a luxury, or as simply frivolous.

Look into the history of our famous artists, Olympic athletes, inspirational novelists, and others of this nature. Unless they are born into extreme wealth, they typically have a benefactor who puts a roof over their head, feeds them, and subsidizes their efforts until they can get to a place where their work is able to pay for itself. Many famous painters, sculptors, classical music composers, and such were never acknowledged during their own lifetimes for the work that they did. They were independently wealthy or someone paid their way. Sometimes benefactors do it because they have a simple love of the arts, a love of athletic games, a love of good books, and such. Other times they do it from an investment perspective. Should the person develop their craft to a point that it is profitable, then they are promised a percentage of the proceeds. In either case, a benefactor typically will support the artists, missionaries, and athletes that show the most promise.

The benefactor and the artists have one thing in common, they both see the world as a better place for the gifts and talents that are shared. A woman who works two jobs and raises the kids so that her husband can focus all of his attention on his entrepreneurial efforts is doing so because she truly believes in him, in his business, and that some day it will all pay off financially. Even if he fails, she believes in the dream and will most likely cheer him on to try again. Parents will pay a fortune to get the coaching and training their child needs, if they show the potential and passion of a future gold medallist. Why? Because they believe in the dream.

Do not forget the gifts of those who would give their gifts to the world even if it means that they will live in poverty for doing so. The couple that chooses to live off one income so that their children can have one stay-at-home parent is making that decision with their eyes wide open. The folks who travel into Africa to give aid to the starving and the dying do not see their lack of monetary gain as important enough to quit. The entrepreneur lives on a shoestring budget so that he can create a business knowing that the world is a better place for the goods and services that his company will provide. There is a spiritual lesson and a truly heartfelt joy that comes from knowing that giving our gift is so much more important than driving a large SUV while wearing the latest fashions. Yes, we would have liked it if a wealthy benefactor had shown up in our lives, but their absence will not stop us from moving forward with our dreams.

But what does it matter if we have artists, actors, athletes, and such in the world? Isn’t it all technically just a pleasant luxury of life? Do we really need sporting events, rock concerts, art on our walls, Broadway plays, and books that are not factual scientific textbooks? Yes! Yes, we do NEED them. These things keep us sane. Imagine for a moment what the world would be like without any music. Imagine the world without any movies, plays, and fairy tales. Imagine the world without mystery novels, romance novels, self-help books, autobiographies, or children’s storybooks. Imagine the world void of art, beauty, fashion, rose gardens, water fountains, birdbaths, and wind chimes. Imagine the world without entrepreneurs, where everyone works for large well-established organizations and you can never break free of that rule. Imagine a world without priests, ministers, rabbis, monks, nuns, and other spiritual healers because they cannot PROVE that their work is actually a necessity. Imagine a world without comedians, clowns, and toy makers. In a world where everyone went out and got a ‘real job,’ these things would be no more. Imagine a world where the only ‘work’ that was acceptable was work that was practical, logical, and earned a stable income.

We would drift into such a darkness of the soul. We would sink into a horrible depression without these beautiful gifts of the heart. Throughout the history of mankind, we have entertained ourselves with the arts, athletics, spiritual and philosophical debates, and with forms of laughter. It is through these creative arts, intellectual arts, fine arts, and physical arts that we maintain the sanity of the human race. Laughter is the best medicine. Happiness and a joyful heart are the purest of spiritual gifts that the universe has to offer.

We are not born to become super logical serious analytical worker bees. We are here to manifest the spirit of love and inner-connectivity throughout the world. We are here to design and play at building cultures and belief systems. We are not here to be some greedy corporation’s salesmen, paper pushers, and clones of those in the next cubicle over. We are here to be the expression of the human spirit in its greatest form. We do that through the arts. Not everyone is called to be an artist, a musician, an athlete, a minister, an actor, a stay-at-home parent, or an entrepreneur. However, everyone does benefit from the fact that they are here leading us to the belief that there is something inspirational out there. There is something more to life than just work. There is also love, beauty, mental health, spiritual health, and laughter.

I cannot write music, make films, run a 4-minute mile, or ice skate like a ballerina, but I am healed, inspired, motivated, and touched by the passion of those who can. What a dark and cold place this would be without those passionate ones who refuse to get a ‘real job?’ The world really is a better place because these passionate artists, motivational athletes, and inspirational ministers chose to break free of the mainstream normal lives that others would have expected of them. Somewhere in the hearts and souls of these people, they had to find the answer to that question…. “Why don’t I get a real job? Because the world needs my gift as much as I need to give it.”

Choosing The Right Screw For The Job

To the untrained eye, one screw is as good as another, but those with a little more awareness have a better chance of realising that choosing the right screw for a particular job can mean the difference between a project succeeding and failing.

The industrial and construction sectors have literally hundreds of different types of screws and fasteners to select from; each type suited for a particular usage e.g. lubricated timber decking screws for quicker driving into outdoor decking, self-drilling screws for the convenience of not having to drill pilot holes and even screws that work specifically with the mechanical properties of plastics.

Before you can choose the best screw for a job you should consider the characteristics you desire in a screw such as:

* Does it need to be waterproof to avoid corrosion from moisture?

* Does the screw head need to be flush with material once it's screwed into place?

* Does the screw need to be protected from vandalism or unauthorised removal?

* Is the screw to be used in wood, metal or perhaps plastic?

* What length of screw is required?

For different types of material there tends to be a different type of screw. Take the following as examples:

* Wood screws – designed to perform best in all types of wood including hardwood, MDF and chipboard. Smaller screws have less chance of splitting wood, but if you're using larger screws and/or working near the end of a piece of wood then it's often safer to drill a pilot hole first.

* Floor screws – these will cope with the issue of different expansion rates so are best used for securing timber or chipboard to steel supports. Made by a process that ensures a hard exterior whilst retaining a tough, flexible core.

* Self-drilling screws – designed for convenience as only a screwdriver is required. These screws drill their own holes and form their own mating threads ensuring the best fit in a single attempt.

* Timber decking screws – specially designed to deal with outdoor conditions with durable, protective coatings.

* Frame anchor screws – designed for fixing window and door frames made from PVC-U, wood or aluminium directly to brickwork without the need for plugs or nylon anchors.

A general rule of thumb for determining an appropriate length of you should look for a screw length that will allow two-thirds of its length to be embedded into the material being fastened to. So, for example, if you're fastening a 1-inch thick piece of timber to a wooden post then you should be looking at embedding 2-inches of the screw into the post. That means you would require a screw length of 3-inches.

All good screw suppliers will be able to advise on the appropriate screws for your task. The important thing is to appreciate that not all screws are the same and that using the right screw can mean a secure installation, whilst the wrong screw can mean in an accident waiting to happen.

A List of Tough Job Interview Questions For Tough Times

The information presented here is designed to provide a benefit to anyone who must answer questions during the dreaded job interview. The main point presented here is that the key to a successful job interview is preparation. The following discussion expounds on this key point.

While some tough job interview questions take us off guard, others we can see coming a mile away. How we answer job interview questions will make the difference between getting and not getting the job. We all have questions that we'd rather not be asked during an interview. But how can one prepare completely for a tough interview?

The answer to this question really comes down to intense preparatory work. In a nutshell, do your homework. Make sure that you know your resume thoroughly and expect questions to come from your work history. Also, expect questions about the company you want to work for and the type of future you want in that company, and finally, expect questions about you. You should use several large lists of questions in preparation for the interview. Below, you will find a list of tough job interview questions, which should be helpful in preparation for the job interview.

While the questions below are pretty standard and can be expected at most job interviews, you should also create your own questions. In creating your questions in preparation for an interview, you really need to sit down and think through what you would ask if you were the interviewer. Remember that the person interviewing you has a job to do as well. If you can provide a good answer to most of the questions below, and to the questions you have created, you have increased the probability of obtaining the job you are seeking.

Obviously during a job interview, regardless of your personality, you need to be congenial and polite. Try not to appear nervous as well. Most importantly, try to appear confident in yourself but not to the point of appearing cocky. Remember, the interviewer is not only trying to select the best candidate for the job, they also want to be sure that you will be compatible with other employees you will be working with. Also, remember that the interviewer is trying their best to find any red flags that may be present in your past work history.

The following is a list of questions you can expect at most job interviews. You most likely will not be asked all of these questions, but you can expect some of them. Many of these questions come from About.com, and some were created by our staff.

Job Interview Questions: About the New Job and the Company

What interests you about this job?

Why do you want this job?

What applicable attributes or experience do you have?

Are you overqualified for this job?

What can you do for this company?

What do you know about this company?

Why do you want to work here?

What challenges are you looking for in a position?

What can you contribute to this company?

Are you willing to travel?

Is there anything I haven't told you about the job or company that you would like to know?

How do you plan to achieve those goals?

How long would you like to stay with our company and why?

What are your salary requirements - both short-term and long-term?

What will you do if you don't get this position?

Once again, the key to a successful job interview is preparation. When you are completely prepared, you will tend to be less nervous. Of course, it is highly likely you will be presented with a question or two that you did not expect. This is why preparation also entails having the knowledge base that you can expect the interviewer will tap into.

Here I am not talking about the knowledge needed to do the job. That should be a given anyway, otherwise you would have not been asked to be at the interview. Here I am talking about knowing yourself and your attitudes, and being able to present your attitudes in a way the interviewer can appreciate. It does not hurt to let the interviewer know what really makes you tick, if the interview goes in that direction.

Make sure that you display an enthusiastic attitude. Make sure you present to the interviewer a willingness to learn and a desire to advance in the company you are about to potentially work for. You do not want to appear as if you are lacking seriousness and definitely do not appear cavalier. Try to appear enthusiastic and positive in a mature and professional way. If you are naturally an enthusiastic and positive type of person, then half the battle is won. The point is to be your self, but try to present the best of who you are.

Remember this, many employers prefer a less educated candidate with fewer credentials who is bright and willing to learn, over one who is more prepared but lacks the proper attitude. A good example of this is the entrepreneur who wants to launch a new business. For him or her who is starting a new venture, hiring someone who is bright and has the right attitude is extremely important. More important then previous education. In this case, the entrepreneur is looking for someone who is not afraid to take risks and is very much goal oriented. Here it is very important that you display to the interviewer your ability to work as part of a team. The 9 to 5 type worker who expects to work basically the same hours 5 days a week would not fit well here. And the interviewer needs to know this.

To conclude, in the end, most interviewers are looking for the right attitude for the job they are trying to fill. If you also have the right credentials along with the right attitude, then your chances are increased tremendously. If you can answer most of the above questions, display an enthusiastic attitude, and present yourself in the best possible way, this should result in you obtaining the job you are seeking.

Green Job Growth Set to Explode in U.S.

The huge potential for growth in green jobs is being mandated and funded. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 require large utilities to obtain 15 percent of their electricity from new renewable resources such as solar and wind by 2020. On May 18th, 2009, Secretary of the Department of Energy Chu announced the first 16 of the 100 standards that much be addressed by September in order to clear the way for the expenditure of Stimulus Package funds towards expanding the Smart Grid.

Small and medium-sized businesses particularly are predicted to expand the green jobs market rapidly over the next ten years with considerable financial support for the investment markets and government. The Cleantech Network reports that venture capitalists have put $1.74 billion into North American and European green technology start ups in just the third quarter of 2007.

Additionally, the energy crisis and the large number of retirements expected over the next 10 years in public utilities are contributing to the transition to a greener economy. According to the President of the Association of Energy Engineers, Rusty Hodopp, 41 percent of its members plan to retire within the next ten years.

The skill set that workers need to have in place is varied and multiple within the five green energy industries of wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, and smart grid.

Currently, Germany and Spain each generate 5 percent of their energy from the wind while U.S. total is only .5 percent. Wind power ranked second to biomass as a renewable energy job source as of 2006 in the U. S. The capacity to create all the energy needed for the entire country from just wind power is estimated to be within boundaries of four states—Texas, North Dakota, Kansas, and South Dakota, according to a U.S. Conference of Mayors Report.

Since 2000 installation of solar panels has increased by 45 percent each year and the industry growing by 35 percent each year. It is working on reducing cost associated with manufacturing and installation.

In the U. S. biomass is very research-oriented with a focus on corn ethanol. Biomass is used in Brazil with 40 percent of its transportation fuel made by using sugar cane. It reduces the carbon footprint of the consumer, but only by about 15 percent as energy must be used to convert plant and animal material into clean energy.

Smart Grid refers to increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the mix of energy sources to decrease vulnerability to terrorist attacks as well as brown-outs and black-outs. President Obama sited Xcel’s efforts to make Boulder, Colorado the country’s first smart grid city in his introduction of the Stimulus Package.

These emerging industries have companies throughout the world many of which have job listings across the disciplines on line. The common bond in this green jobs field market is the need for engineering professional or technical training experience. Many of the companies are also looking for team players with open communication styles. It seems prudent to develop our green jobs with the necessary skills and flexibility to adapt to our greener economy.

How to Research Any Job Market

A lot of job seekers today just jump on the queue, without prior knowledge about the company or market they are applying to. What happens after? They end up more disappointed and frustrated.

Only those who understand how to stand out can get the job. More so, remember no one will recruit a liability not even to talk of a novice. Never worry you are about to be exploded!

So let roll!

In carrying out your job search, you need to have several kinds of information at your disposal. You will need to research industry trends, details about the particular company you are or will be applying to, even details about the human resources manager. What I am saying is that, assuming you are applying to bank now, which common today, you first like to know about what is happening in industry which is BANKING, ok! Then later you will move to the particular bank you are applying to and the type of HR manager they have.

Cleared? Fine, let's ride on.

While carrying out these research put in mind the following questions so that it can serve as a guide during your search. They are;

What is it about this industry do I need to know so that I can ask and answer questions intelligently?

where can I get information about them?

What type of information am I looking for?

What do I need to know about the HR manager that will help me to write a better application letter and also be able to answer questions more confidently during the interview?

Remember carrying out a research is not like eating your best food, and that is why many job seekers shy away from it. If you consider the rate at which people are employed through a newspaper advert. You will found out that only a few find their job via these means.

Once you can research the market properly, then you will have a better idea of what you going in for. More importantly you will be able to tailor your CV and application letter more effectively due to the level of information you have at your disposal.

Now, How to carry out the research!

As you start off, researching the company trends, what you will be looking for are:

The main growth area.

The main players in the market.

The main challenges and problems facing the industry.

Now you know what you will look for, and then make a visit to the nearest university library or any other well equipped library around you search for their reference guide on your chosen industry trends. If this do not work then you go on-line and make your search on the common search engines, this does not take much time to find out.

Now next step is for you to narrow down your search to some specific companies which you are aiming for in your job search. While doing this, keep in mind these key facts about each of these organizations. These can be categorizing into six, they are;

Strong and weak point.

Major challenges.

Organizational structure.

Organizational culture.

Company size like: number of staff, profit, market share, profit, etc.

Main competitors.

To make the search easier for you, get hold of the companies report, or as I said earlier go online and get your hand on this information.

If this do not work find a means of speaking to their employees about what it is like working for that particular company, ask them about their competitors, strength and weakness, every other thing you deemed fit.

Now we are done with the company, let's move further to your specific job.

In doing this effectively you will need to know the following things;

What will be your task and responsibilities

What is the required qualification?

The typical salary job

What are their human resources like?

Laying your hand on a thing like this will make you better prepared with your CV and most importantly the interview.

WARNING

If you do not do your research so well, the company may say or do something that will as been ignorant of their business, which may ruin your opportunity of been taken. But if you do it will you will increase your chances by 100%.

For you to do it right it is better you have a file for all this research so that you can keep a track of those information it can be of help during your interview.

ACTION PLAN QUESTIONS

1. Why do you need to research your Job market?

2. How do I carry out the search?

3. What do I need to know about my chosen company?

4. What questions do I need answered as regard the Job I am looking for?

Tips For Hiring The Best Employee For The Job

How do you find the right employees for your company? How do you avoid the pitfalls that occur when you hire the wrong guy or gal?

Well, let's face it: some things can't be prevented. No matter how good a potential candidate may look on paper, and even if they make a great impression in their interview(s), you can't guarantee how they will function as an employee of your company.

Some businesses employ the use of a personality test, competence test, or other such tests. These are a great way to get an extra gauge on how a prospective employee may do things once hired.

When it comes to actual competence testing, however, it is best to not only view their previous experience but also give them an on-the-job test. Let's suppose that you are going to hire a cook. Make arrangements with the job candidate for him or her to come in and cook a sample meal as part of the process of executing a second or third interview. This may seem a little strange, but it will help you ensure you find the right person for the job.

When it comes to personality, you can ask the person certain questions and give them certain hypothetical scenarios in order to get a feel for how they might react in these situations should they be faced with them while working for you. Think of issues that you have encountered with prior problem employees.

For example, if a prior employee talked too much on the job and wasn't as productive as you'd have liked, ask during an interview what the prospective employee's outlook is on talking and doing personal things while on the job. This will not only get the subject on the table, it will also let them know right off the bat that you aren't going to stand for any tomfoolery at your workplace.

What about employees who are too bossy? What about ones who assume too much about their leadership role without prompting or being named as a member of management or without being named as a supervisor? Sit down and write down a series of issues you've faced, and formulate polite questions about this which will help you weed out the bad and keep the good, when you are hiring.

Remember that when you hire someone, you are not the only one interviewing. You are also being interviewed. This potential candidate for the job has every right to look at what you have to offer and decide if they think it will be worth working for you. Give every interviewee a chance to prove himself/herself. But also, make sure you also make a point to sell them on what advantages working for your company will present.

Managing Finances After a Job Loss or Redundancy

Gaining control over your finances is of paramount importance when the future is a little uncertain. There are many ways to combat this challenge and of course there can be unique aspects to each person’s situation. As experts in change management, we have years of experience helping people come to terms with a job loss and the financial strains that can come with this experience. Below we have listed the most important steps to assisting you cushion yourself thus allowing you take the necessary steps to securing your future.

Though this article deals with the financial aspects of a job loss, I would like to say that the first step in a job loss situation is to:

· Not take it personally. The job loss has nothing to do with you. The job is redundant you are not. The decision to make redundancies was more than likely done in a boardroom thousands of miles away by people who have never met you and due to market conditions that have nothing to do with you.

· See this time as an opportunity for positive change and a chance to develop a challenging and rewarding career for the future.

Taking this as a given, it is important that if such a time arises, or has arisen, that you are able to sustain yourself during that period when you are not working so that you can concentrate on your job search and not worry about bills and expenses.

Step 1: Stay calm. Running around tearing your hair out will not help you in any shape of form. Whether you are willing to admit it or not, losing a job takes a lot out of a person and if you have not given yourself time to get over it, you will find it more difficult to get re-hired. So, allow yourself the time to come to terms with the change. Remember, concentrating your energy on solving this new job search challenge is far more productive than wasting energy on worrying about the cash side. So focus on the right things.

Step 2: Plan ahead. It is not everyone who gets advanced warning that their job is being made redundant so be prepared for this. Make sure that you have saved enough to get your by for at least three months should the worst happen. This may sound ridiculous, however having enough for several month means that you will not have to take the first job that comes along. It also gives you some free time to collect and recharge yourself.

Step 3: Know what your company will be giving you. You may be eligible for a redundancy payout. Ask HR and see what the company can provide for you. Also, look into social welfare payments and ask your local office what payments or allowances you can avail of.

Step 4: Add up all the essential bills, rent, utilities, food etc. Know exactly what you need to cover your basic costs. This will allow you to easily budget for the monthly essentials.

Step 5: Prioritise your bills. Some bills are paid monthly, other have a longer line of credit. Use this to your advantage. If the rent is due this week but the phone bill does not need to be paid until next month do not waste your money on the phone bill now. However do remember that the phone bill does need to be paid at some point.

Step 6: Cut out all other expenses. Examples of ways to do this are:

· Walk rather than take the bus/car

· Use Skype to Skype rather than your mobile phone

· Re-look at where you are doing your grocery shopping

· Substitute your shopping items to for the generic brand (its all the same produce in a different package)

· Invite your friends to your house rather than meet them in a café, or bar

Be strict with your spending and watch out for those impulsive buys that can really add up.

Step 7: Keep a diary of all your expenses for a month. Write down everything that you spend and what it was for. When you review this list you will see where you have been wasting your money. This is where you find the few extra shillings to put aside.

Step 8: Be very careful when using credit, especially credit cards. They are very expensive to run with extremely high interest rates and having a bad line of credit may hurt you down the line when you need a loan for something else. However if you really need a loan, shop around with the banks and credit unions to get the best deal on repayments. Also, while asking about loans, ask your bank manager if you can put current expenses on hold. Sometimes you can freeze mortgage payments or extend the time of an existing loan to decrease monthly payments.

Step 9: If things are getting tight and there is no new job in site then take a temporary role. It makes no difference what the job is. Just make sure that you leave enough time in the day to continue your job search.

Step 10: If all of that is not working well for you then consider explaining your situation to your family. They may have some ideas on how you can cut your costs further or come up with a favourable, repayable, finance plan to get you by for the short term.

Experiencing a job loss can be unnerving. But such situations can be effectively solved by carefully devising a plan on how to get past the unemployment period. Remember that you are not the only one who is going through this. The majority of people come out of it unscathed and ready to do battle again, as will you.
